A MEMBER of the cast of Scottish soap River City was on hand to give budding young actors advice after he paid a visit to a West Lothian school last week.

Actor Ryan Smith, who plays Charlie in the popular show, visited Deans Community High School to talk to pupils.

"When I was at school it wasn't cool to be an actor," said Ryan. "If I can encourage people to get into that it's something I would quite like to do."

The actor attended assembly in the morning and a drama class at the end of the school day.

Being a practising Christian he was invited to the school through its chaplain, who was a minister at the actor's church.

While at the school, Ryan also found time to talk to canteen worker Ann Donnelly, who is a big River City fan. She is retiring next week after working in the school canteen for 20 years.
