Art show aiming for some sheer brilliance

YOU may have heard of a new blockbuster film called The Men Who Stare At Goats starring heartthrobs George Clooney, Ewan McGregor and Jeff Bridges, but you may be staring at sheep soon at a local arts centre.

Local artists producing paintings, photographs, drawings, collage or any other two-dimensional art are invited to submit work for the first group exhibition ever to be mounted in the new gallery at Livingston's Howden Park Centre.

Inspired by Sheep is the working title of a new exhibition at Livingston's Howden Park Centre, and the judging panel wants the most original, interesting and colourful submissions on the theme of the woolly animals in works that make a social, ecological or fantastical statement.

Those applying must be aged over 14 and live in West Lothian, while each artist can submit up to three original works no smaller than A3 (29.7cms x 42cms).

Paintings or other works on canvas should be finished to a high standard and photos, drawings, watercolours or textiles must be framed (in a neutral colour) and mounted.

Submissions must be made to the centre's gallery by Monday, 4 October at 4pm. A panel of judges will then select the images to be included in the exhibition in Spring 2011.

The extraordinary art of the Picts will also be brought to life in the arts centre on 17 June when artist and sculptor Barry Groves joins forces with representatives from the archaeology department of the National Museums of Scotland and the Glenmorangie Company.

They plan to unveil some of the results of a partnership that is revealing Scotland's artistic and cultural heritage.

Mr Grove will discuss his work and his latest commission to create a new sculpture for the entrance to the new bottling plant being opened by The Glenmorangie Company at the Alba Campus in Livingston.

As well as being the newest piece of public art in West Lothian, the commission is the latest element in the longstanding partnership that is recreating objects which were last seen and used over a thousand years ago.

The partnership was inspired by the eighth century Pictish Hilton of Cadboll Stone found on the shores of the Dornoch firth near The Glenmorangie Company's Highland home in Tain, Ross-shire.

The seminar will be held on Thursday, 17 June from 7-9pm. Admission is free. Book on 01506 777666.
