Beryl show set to raise money for flood appeal
A COUNTY playwright is penning a new comedy show to raise cash for Pakistan after being overcome with grief at watching the aftermath of the recent devastating floods.
Beryl Beattie, from Livingston, said she couldn't "sit by" and watch the human disaster without trying to help and is in the process of organising a gala evening to raise money for the global aid effort.
She is now appealing for volunteers, models and actors to take part in the event which will also feature a fashion show.
"You cannot sit and watch the devastation and human suffering from your cosy, comfortable home and not want to help," said big-hearted Beryl, who also writes arts reviews for the Herald & Post.
"Everyone taking part or helping out is donating their time free of charge and it would be a great thing if this could inspire the West Lothian community to help.
"Having watched with horror and sadness the devastation of the Pakistan floods on television, I wanted to help, as indeed we all do, and the only way I know is to stage a show.
"So I contacted West Lothian Council who have once again generously agreed to donate the use of the Howden Park Centre and, as they say, it is all systems go,"
The show will run on Wednesday, 17 November at Livingston's Howden Park Centre.
Councillor Carl John, who sits on the Edinburgh and Lothian's Racial Equality Council and is a member of the West Lothian Community Race Forum, is fully on board with the idea.
He added: "When Beryl came up with her plan I thought the race forum would be ideal for helping with the project. The devastation in Pakistan is horrendous and the millions affected need our support.
"The event at Howden Park Centre supports a worldwide effort to help the people of Pakistan and I'd urge people to come along. We are delighted to be able to support the event."
The format of the evening will be along similar lines to last year's smash hit gala evening, with the world premiere of new comedy play Vanity at the Vicarage, and the fashion show.
Anyone interested in taking part should contact Beryl on 01506 432011 or email berylbeattie@aol.com
Tickets cost 7 and are on sale now at the Howden Park Centre box office on 01506 777666.
