Joe's art takes centre stage
AN ARTIST is exhibiting his work at a West Lothian theatre this month following his success at another gallery.
Joe Hawthorn, 58, from Eliburn in Livingston, is presenting his latest creations at the Regal Theatre in Bathgate.
The Twenty exhibition, consisting of 20 of his paintings, will be on show until 30 September.
One of his paintings, of Michael Marra – widely acclaimed as one of Scotland's most talented and original songwriters and performers – was part of the Aspect Prize Exhibition on show at the Paisley Museum and Art Gallery earlier this year.
Mr Hawthorn, who works with a group of artists with learning difficulties at Blackburn Support Centre, said: "The portrait of Michael Marra was on exhibition. Michael has seen it and complimented me on my work.
"I consider that my work is eclectic in its mix of subject and form, covering portrait, pop art, landscape, figurative, landscape and abstract.
"I enjoy working in all mediums, preferring the immediacy of acrylic."
The artist says he has always been a "dreamer" and is inspired by the "beautiful landscape and scenery" of West Lothian after growing up in Glasgow.
He added: "Whether you are a banker, baker or candle-stick maker everyone has a life story.
"I am blessed in that I can easily access the many country walks and parklands from my home and I enjoy walking these pathways.
"Always I find myself invigorated surrounded by the lush vegetation and the wide array of wildlife that my eyes feast upon time and again, and as the light continually changes I am always assured of seeing something different if not spectacular at these times.
"My life as an artist has taken many twists and turns over the years, but I think if I am honest with myself then I would have to say that I have always been a dreamer.
"The term dreamer is not about living in the clouds, but using my thoughts and imagination as I have pondered on life issues and concerns of our ailing planet.
"Having said all of that, my art portfolio is an eclectic mix in both medium and subject matter. I feel that as an artist I not only look to be inspired but also inspiring to others.
"I also feel that as an artist if I feel a burning issue – whether global, national or personal – that I should capture and highlight on canvas and perhaps help stimulate debate.
"Art should be enjoyed, not only by the artist but the viewer equally."
