WORK is now under way in a bid to make nesting safer for a number swans who have frequented the Lanthorn Pond in Livingston.

The swans have proved immensely popular with local residents in recent years. As well as making it safer for the birds to nest, it is hoped it will also increase the chances of them having cygnets.

Improvements include making the iris bed where the swans nest less accessible to children and foxes. The bed will become an island again, after a build up of silt had joined it to the bank.
