Council in pothole plea

WEST Lothian Council is appealing to the public to report potholes in the road to help its repair crews deal with the problems caused by the recent snow and ice.

The council says it is dealing with potholes as they are reported, but it is becoming a bigger problem as the snow slowly thaws and more appear.

Executive councillor for the environment Robert De Bold said: “Potholes appear in roads following a severe freeze and thaw event. As the potholes are reported on the roads, network action is taken to schedule repairs. Several potholes have already been identified and repaired.

“With roads surface temperatures still close to freezing, the full extent of the road and footway damage is still not fully apparent. However, it will become evident as the thaw continues. Roads that have been checked can develop potholes as the thaw continues. Whilst we are managing the situation at the moment, we would encourage the public to be vigilant and help assist us by reporting any potholes they see.”

You can report potholes by e-mailing: customer.service@westlothian.gov.uk and marking the e-mail potholes, or by calling 01506 775000 and providing clear directions to the pothole.

Along with the potholes, we also have the grit! In view of the fact that the snow has all but disappeared, and until the next fall of snow, would you not be able to FILL the potholes with vast amounts of grit still lying on the roadways, and as a result also on the carpets in my house? Whilst we are on the subject, In Livingston there is a sad lacking of "pavements" at the side of the road, and while footpaths and underpasses are available, the predominant way of pedestrian travel is beside the roadway. Fear of using the footways and underpasses is well understood in view of the various attacks that have taken place, when therefor, are we going to get pavements to suit the public and not the walkways as dictated by the architects and planners?
