Children's Panel thanks its members

NEW members of the West Lothian Children's Panel were given a rousing reception at the Provost's annual Reception.

The Children's Panel Advisory Committee (CPAC) welcomed its new members at the yearly event in the West Lothian Civic Centre in Livingston.

This year's event was extra special because the council gave recognition to those panel members with ten or more years of service.

Provost Tom Kerr and Bill MacDonald, chair of CPAC, made short speeches before each of the new Children's Panel members was presented with a certificate to mark the end of their training.

The West Lothian School Wind Ensemble also entertained guests with some fantastic tunes.

The Provost said: "The Children's Panel plays a vital role in supporting vulnerable children in our communities, and I'm delighted to welcome our new members.

"As adults, we should all remember how difficult it can be growing up, finding your place in the world and all the uncertainty which that brings.

"That's why the Children's Panel, made up of local people taking decisions to help local youngsters, is so important."

Bill MacDonald added: "The hearing system is undergoing a major overhaul, with a Bill currently working its way through the Scottish Parliament.

"The group of long-serving panel members is especially important to the system, as they are able to share their experience and knowledge with new panel members and will ensure continuity."

"Giving back to the community in this way is an immensely rewarding and worthwhile contribution to make.

"Local panels rely on volunteers. There are no special qualifications needed and we want people from all backgrounds to consider joining up this year to help young people."
