Sharing a buggy with my brother David when I was two and seeing our house in Pentland Avenue, Boghall. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the house looked great.

2. Favourite place/thing in West Lothian and why?

Knock Hill. I have saw it in all seasons and at all times of the day and night. Fantastic views and biting wind and if you know its past, it can cause the hair to stand up at the back of your neck.

3. Who or what inspires you?

Family, various authors like Dostoevsky or Bulgakov. Anyone and anything that makes me think beyond the surface.

4. Who or what annoys you the most? People who use language to confuse meaning. Words should clarify and inspire, not hinder or demean.

Being 'savaged' by a pony at Edinburgh Zoo when I was 6. the pony was chewing away at the buttons of my jacket and I didn't know what to do or how to react. Never been near a pony or a horse since.

Night out At the old Volunteer Arms, in the good old days, where conversation could range from French cinema in the 1930s to the lack of Spanish born footballers in the Scottish Premier League.

7. You are the leader of West Lothian. What would you change first?

I would recreate Bathgate Town Council and the post of provost. It's time to regenerate the sense of civic pride which the town once had and has lost over the past 30 years.
