Distribution centre to deliver 100 new jobs

A GROCERY chain has announced it is to create 100 new jobs in West Lothian when it opens a distribution centre in November.

Independent retail and wholesale company Nisa Today is gearing up to open a 195,000 sq ft distribution depot in Deans Industrial Estate, Livingston, which has been welcomed as a major jobs boost for the county.

The site was chosen because of the skilled labour in the area and its location in the central belt as the company will be shipping goods to stores in the north of England, throughout Scotland and Northern and Republic of Ireland.

It's the company's first distribution centre in Scotland and the warehouse will be operated by global distribution provider DHL.

John Sharpe, Nisa's managing director of central distribution trading and logistics said: "We are delighted to have opened the depot in Livingston and create jobs in the area.

"The depot has the necessary capacity for future growth and reduces our food miles by moving goods closer to our customers, therefore transporting fewer goods to Scotland and the Irish ports.

"As Livingston is located in between Glasgow and Edinburgh, there is a high level of skilled labour in the area, which will be extremely beneficial to our business."

Livingston MSP Angela Constance welcomed the news after watching thousands of jobs disappear from the county through the closure of sites at the likes of Bausch and Lomb and losses in Shinetsu at the start of the recession.

"One hundred new jobs is great news for West Lothian and I would like to welcome Nisa Today to Livingston," said the MSP.

"Its heartening that they chose to open their first Scottish depot in Livingston. It shows that West Lothian still has what it takes to compete despite the difficult economic climate."

The company has three stores in West Lothian in Broxburn, Armadale and Whitburn and 225 in Scotland.

Its annual turnover has increased to 1.42 billion instead of its projected 1.318bn. More than 2.53 million cases pass through its disribution network each year.
