Fancy a pint? I know this great wee pub for real ale

IF YOU'RE looking for a pint of good old fashioned ale then West Lothian is the best place in Scotland to find one according to the world's largest travel website.

TripAdvisor has named the Four Marys pub in Linlithgow's High Street the third best place in Britain to pick up a pint of real ale after the establishment received rave reviews from tourists on the site's popularity index.

Only The Castle Inn in Dorset and The Saint George & Dragon in Exeter were voted better.

One TripAdvisor traveller wrote: "The atmosphere is lovely and there's an excellent selection of beers."

The Four Marys, famous for its cask ale, has been run by husband and wife Ian and Eve Forrest - who live above the pub - for the past 13 years.

Eve said: "We didn't even know about it until last Sunday when one of our regulars came in with a cutting from a newspaper. It shows we must be doing something right.

"To be named third out of the whole of Britain is amazing. We do get a lot of tourists in and I know we're in a lot of holiday books and real ale guides as well.

"Real ale is very important and Ian is top notch. He knows everything there is to know about them and I think we have very good standards in the pub.

"We don't have a high turnover of staff so regulars know who is serving them and I think that keeps our customers happy as well."

The Four Marys is recognised by CAMRA (Campaign For Real Ale) in the Good Beer Guide and stocks eight pumps of real ale and 20 pumps during its annual cask ale festival.

This year's festival, on October 29-30, will be the pub's 24th.

TripAdvisor spokeswoman, Emma O'Boyle, said: "The Four Marys is a very deserving winner in the Trip- Advisor Top Real Ale Pub hotels list. Not only is the Four Marys recognised by CAMRA but now it's also recognised by the reviewers on TripAdvisor – real guests who have clearly enjoyed its real ale selection and friendly atmosphere. Reviews from past visitors consistently praise the food, drink and hospitality and we look forward to seeing many more glowing reviews of the Four Marys on the site."

The pub stocks a host of "local" ales from Belhaven, Inveralmond and the likes of Harveston in Clackmannshire and Deuchars, which is brewed in Edinburgh.
