Key garden role for IT specialists

A TEAM of IT specialists put aside their keyboards to carry out hands-on work sprucing up a sensory garden at a county respite home for kids.

Fifteen green-fingered volunteers from Atos Origin in Livingston spent a day at NHS Lothian's Sunndach Children's Respite Home to help the charity to maintain its garden space.

The sensory garden, which has been cared for by the company over the last two and a half years, provides a much-needed bright and peaceful place for the young residents with complex nursing needs and their families.

Charge nurse at the centre, Maureen Theurer said: "The team at Atos Origin have been wonderful volunteers for us for some time now and all of the staff at Sunndach are delighted at the work that they have done and the children love when they visit.

"They have been a real help with maintaining the garden and painting some great artwork on the garden fence. It's really appreciated when businesses offer this sort of contribution, especially when it means donating precious time."

Atos Origin, which was awarded Best Business in West Lothian at the West Lothian Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards 2009, takes its corporate social responsibility seriously and its work with Sunndach is one of its biggest charitable initiatives.

Atos vice president for Scotland, Steve Langmead, added: "Not only did it give an opportunity for the team to help in the garden, it also opened their eyes to the fantastic work that the Sunndach Respite Home does for its residents.

"Hands-on work like this also enables staff to see the tangible benefits of their donations in terms of time and money.

"It is important that as a company we continue to take time to give something back to the local community and helping the staff at the Sunndach Respite Home is one way that we can do that. I look forward to seeing our other team building creations over the next few months."

Sunndach is supported by the Sick Kids Friends Foundation. Atos Origin has raised almost 6,000 for the charity.
