LETTER: Council leaders should be paying their own way to Germany

IN RESPONSE to comments made by council leader Peter Johnston in a recent Herald & Post article regarding the payments of flights to Germany by Labour councillors for twinning visits, Councillor Lawrence Fitzpatrick has requested the right to reply.

Councillor Johnston is being totally disingenuous as regards his statement of elected members having their travel costs for the German twinning met by council taxpayers.

On the one twinning visit I made in 1999, I reimbursed the council for my travel costs, as did all my Labour colleagues.

We agreed to do so due to council financial constraints at the time.

I travelled to Germany on two further occasions in support of our wonderful young brass musicians and again paid my own travel costs.

Councillor Johnston is the highest paid elected member on the council. In these difficult times, he should lead by example and insist that his administration colleagues pay their own way.

Cllr Lawrence Fitzpatrick, Livingston South Ward
