WEST Lothian rider Jo Barry rounded off her visit to the national winter dressage championships in style with a hat-trick of titles.
The 28-year-old from Kirknewton produced another assured performance with the striking black Vivaldi
V to lift the last of her national titles, the Albion Medium Open Championship, at the weekend.

She ensured her 16-hour round trip was worthwhile, adding the Albion title to the Bucas Medium Music Freestyle Championship and the Equissage Elementary Open Music Freestyle Championship at the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships, Hartpury, Gloucestershire.

Barry and Vivaldi maintained their perfect strike rate to head a 27-strong class to win with 72.07 per cent in the Albion.

"I can't quite believe it," said a delighted Barry after the event. "The week was an absolute dream and to take a third one is amazing.

"We were a bit wobbly warming up and then Carl (Hester) appeared and just his presence seemed to help. He's been a huge support."

Barry was quick to praise the gelding she part owns with Lady Hope, adding: "Vivaldi has been wonderful and given his all each time out.

"He just rises to the occasion. He has a super temperament and his consistency is such a strong point. Everything just felt right."

In the Equissage Elementary event, Barry beat a field of 25 competitors to come in clear of her nearest rivals with a dramatic routine set to music from the opera Carmen.

She added: "He just felt great. He's hot but nicely hot. The more people who watch the happier he is. He returned to competition only last May after 18 months off due to injury and he's come back even more full of life and loving the job more.

"I train with both Carl Hester and Stephen Clarke who have been working on us creating more energy in Vivaldi's work – working him with grand prix in mind."

Barry, who runs a competition training and livery yard, was also second in the Baileys Horse Feeds Novice Open Music Freestyle Championship that concluded last Wednesday with the six-year-old gelding Rameau II on a score of 75.19 per cent.
