Amateur golfers up to scratch in Egypt
BATHGATE golfers Karen Burns and Graham Bell have finished second in the UK's largest amateur golf tournament after a thrilling grand final in Egypt.
It's the first time that 47-year-old Karen and Graham, 35, have taken part in the championship and they were delighted to make it through to the final three-day tournament at the stunning Marriott Taba Heights Resort.
"It's been an incredible experience. The golfing trip of a lifetime," said Karen.
"We have played in the most fabulous golfing destination."
This year's Matchplay Championship attracted record entries from throughout the UK and Ireland after each finalist won their place on the plane to Egypt by qualifying at one of two regional finals.
And their reward was three days of competition golf, seven nights' full board accommodation at the five star golf resort and a lavish prize-giving gala dinner.
John Woosey, managing director of The Golfers Club which promotes the Matchplay Championship, said: "We have seen some fantastic play over the grand final in what has been a superb setting, and it's just wonderful to see the Matchplay Championship go from strength to strength.
"Both Karen and Graham have done Bathgate proud."
The Matchplay Championship also recently announced that it will be hosting its 2010-11 Grand Final at The Els Club, Dubai, the stunning course designed by Ernie Els, winner of a record seven World Matchplay titles.
Entries are now open for the event.
