Beaten Broxburn crash out of cup
NINE-MAN Broxburn crashed out of the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup in the third round with a 4-0 defeat away to Bonnyrigg Rose.
Despite a superb first half display from the West Lothian side, their Super League opponents proved too strong in the end as goals from Rose's Mark Robertson, Liam McKenna, Charlie Brigain and Ross Hamilton killed off their hopes of progression.
Broxburn boss Steve Pittman said: "Loads of things didn't go for us but I'm not making any excuses as they were the better team on the day."
In what was a terrific cup-tie, Bonnyrigg keeper Logan pulled off a great save to deny the impressive John Jeffreys before Broxburn were unlucky not to take the lead, Graham Baird's terrific shot from fully 25 yards crashing against the post with Logan helpless on this occasion.
The opening goal came from a long, angled ball that shouldn't have troubled Gary Maley but, inexplicably, the Broxburn goalkeeper didn't deal with it, allowing Robertson to sneak in at the back post and squeeze it in.
While Broxburn were unlucky to find themselves trailing at the break, they were certainly fortunate when Bonnyrigg came out at the start of the second-half looking for a killer second goal.
Stuart Ritchie had already made a goal-saving tackle on Paliczka before Grady was clearly brought down deep inside the box - how referee Gavin Duncan didn't give a penalty really was anyone's guess.
But Bonnyrigg doubled their advantage in the 65th minute, McKenna making amends for that miss at that start as he calmly shot home after Grady had picked him out as he ran through the centre of the Broxburn defence.
There was no way back for Broxburn when Ritchie was a touch unfortunate to be sent off after earning his second yellow card of the afternoon and, shortly afterwards, goalkeeper Maley also got his marching orders after bringing down substitute Andy Howat.
Hamilton stroked home the penalty before Charlie Brigain, another Bonnyrigg substitute, put the icing on the cake with a close-range header following more good work from man of the match Grady.
Elsewhere in the cup, West Calder went down 3-2 away to Renfrew and Whitburn lost 3-1 to Glenrothes on the road.
Linlithgow Rose drew 1-1 with Kelty Hearts, Pumpherston Juniors drew 1-1 with Blackburn United, and Dalkeith Thistle beat Livingston United 5-1 in the South Division.
