Coyne cashes in with two quarter final goals

LINLITHGOW Rose emerged victorious from the Scottish Junior Cup quarter final derby against Bathgate Thistle as striker Tommy Coyne cashed in with two goals.

Cup specialists Rose are now in the semi-final draw of junior football's most coveted prize once again after edging out county rivals Thistle 2-1 in the replay at Prestonfield last Saturday.

Coyne's brace in the first 20 minutes proved the difference in a tight match in front of 1,200 fans.

The first came on nine minutes after Steve Manson's corner was headed back across goal by Scott Wilson where Coyne was waiting to pounce from ten yards.

Manson was again involved in the second 11 minutes later when another corner hit the bar and Coyne was in the right place at the right time to prod home after Bathgate's defence failed to clear the danger.

The visitors pushed hard to get back into the game but it took until midway through the first half to pull one back through in-form frontman Jim Lister, who reacted first to a spill from Rose keeper Steven Pinkowski to slide the ball home.

Rose manager Dave Baikie said: "The two early goals gave us a great start but we became complacent and allowed them into the game.

"But it's great to be in the draw for the semis. Our back four were outstanding and never gave much away on the day. We flagged a bit in the second half but that's when we needed the fresh legs."

Coyne added: "We were hanging on at the end but the damage was done in the first half. It was good to get a double and that gave us the start we wanted."

The semi final draw takes place on Friday.
