Fox left bemused over unseen 'goal'

LIVINGSTON were robbed of three points against Alloa after a last-gasp shot from captain Liam Fox was controversially ruled not to have crossed the goal line, despite a photo showing that it was.

Fox thought he had grabbed the winner, and so did a large proportion of the watching fans, but referee Frank McDermott ruled it out after Alloa new boy Declan McAvoy cleared.

A picture taken by club photographer Robert Speirs, shown on the right, proves that the ball did go over the line.

Manager Gary Bollan, who had just seen Alloa's Andrew Scott score a penalty in injury time to make it 3-3, said: "I've seen a picture that shows Liam's shot was over the line by a yard.

"Officials are humans but it cost us three points."

Fox told the Herald & Post even the Alloa players thought it was over the line.

He said: "It was pretty disappointing. I was 100 per cent confident it had crossed the line at the time and some of the Alloa boys said it was too."

Livi's afternoon had started so well with Kyle Jacobs scoring after just two minutes. A set-piece was sent in by Fox and Jacobs headed home from eight yards.

It was the perfect accompaniment to the beginning of the Lions' campaign in the Second Division after club officials had unfurled the Third Division championship flag.

Iain Russell added a second in fine style after 20 minutes when he raced down the right flank and unleashed a wonderful shot from 35 yards that whistled past startled Alloa goalkeeper Steven Robertson.

Eight minutes after the break, Livi allowed Alloa back into the game when former Raith Rovers winger Darren Smith scored a goal to match Russell's in quality when he fired in a lovely left-footed shot from the edge of the box past Livi keeper Tony Bullock.

Then, four minutes later Brian Prunty made it 2-2.

An own goal from Alloa's McAvoy, under pressure from Russell at a Robbie Winters cross, handed Livi the lead before Andrew Scott levelled in injury time.
