Halliday strike takes Lions to brink of title

SUPER sub Andy Halliday came off the bench to score in time added on to give league leaders Livingston a 1-0 victory over Montrose on Tuesday night to set up a Third Division championship showdown with Forfar at Almondvale on Saturday.

Teenager Halliday, who is rumoured to be signing for Gordon Strachan's Middlesbrough, replaced Keaghan Jacobs midway through the second half of a tight contest and supplied the finish to a Raffaele De Vita cross three minutes into injury time to calm home fans' nerves.

The visitors, who have finally found some form under former Hibee Steven Tweed, came to attack and Livi keeper Roddy McKenzie was the busier until home captain Liam Fox had two efforts on the Montrose goal.

Robbie Winters almost opened the scoring with a header and former Hibs keeper Andy McNeil saved from De Vita and Halliday to keep the game scoreless.

A draw on Saturday at Almondvale will seal the title for the Lions in Gary Bollan's first season as Livi boss.

He said: "We need a point against Forfar on Saturday to clinch the title, but we shan't be playing for a draw, we'll be going for a win."

Elsewhere, Berwick beat Stranraer 1-0 and Elgin defeated Annan by the same score.
