Rose secure final appearance to soften blow of Bo'ness title win

LINLITHGOW ROSE put the misery of a derby defeat to fierce rivals Bo'ness United to rest with a thrilling semi final win over Hill of Beath in the East of Scotland Cup.

The Scottish Junior Cup holders will now meet Musselburgh Athletic in the final following their nail-biting victory after penalties were needed to separate the sides in Fife on Monday night.

After a goalless first half, the match sparked to life five minutes after the restart with a goal from the home side's Andy Roberts after a flick-on by Darren Wright.

But Linlithgow were behind for only five minutes after Stuart McArthur's volley from just inside the area sizzled home.

The visitors thought they had stolen a win just before the end as McArthur scored a second, but Mark Bradley was deemed to be in an offside position by the referee.

Rose's Mark Tyrell then became the hero with the decisive spot-kick in the shoot-out as Linlithgow kept their nerve to win 5-4.

The semi final win came after a disappointing Super League defeat at the hands of Bo'ness, who clinched the East Region Super League title at Newtown Park last Saturday.

Linlithgow were the only team who could catch Bo'ness, but just a week after another Junior Cup crown, Rose's Super League dreams crumbled in the worst possible way.

Around 1,800 fans turned out for the local derby as United clinched their first top flight title for 41 years.

Linlithgow were clearly still suffering from a Junior Cup hangover as Bo'ness bossed the match from start to finish with goals from Fraser Forrest and Steven Ballantine enough to see them over the finish line.

Winning the East Region Super League now puts Bo'ness into the senior Scottish Cup draw along with Linlithgow for the 2010/11 season, where they could face SPL opposition if they manage to navigate through the qualifying rounds.

Meanwhile, in a stormy Fife & Lothians Cup quarter-final between Kirkcaldy YM and Bathgate on Monday, the Super League side won 3-2 against the nine-man Fifers.

Kirkcaldy had their keeper, centre half and coach all sent off. On the scoresheet for Bathgate were Alex Lurinsky (2) and Graeme McLaren.
