Rose win leaves Cup marker

LINLITHGOW Rose limbered up for their upcoming Scottish Junior Cup semi-final against Lochee United with a battling 3-1 win in Fife.

If this dress rehearsal is anything to go by then punters can expect a lively cup tie after an action-packed Super League match last Saturday.

The home side took the lead after 15 minutes when Jason Alexander nut-megged his marker and his low cross to the near post was touched home by Craig Robertson past Rose keeper Steven Pinkowski.

Lochee striker Gary Middleton was sent packing for a second bookable offence 15 minutes after the break, before Rose boss David Baikie made three substitutes to try and change the course of the game.

Within five minutes Linlithgow were level when sub Roddy McLennan set up Steve Manson for the equaliser and John Adam grabbed number two with five minutes left with a great shot from just outside the area.

Paddy Flannery, another sub, fired home number three at the back post with moments left.

Linlithgow will now play Lochee in the first leg of a home and away Junior Cup semi-final format on 10 April in Fife. The winners of the Largs vs Irvine Meadow game will be at home in the first leg to Clydebank, last season's runners-up in the other semi-final.

Elsewhere in the Super League, Bathgate Thistle beat Camelon 1-0 at Creamery Park with the winning goal coming in the 23rd minute.

Jags winger Graeme McLaren latched on to striker Jim Lister's square ball and, despite having his first shot blocked, he managed to turn his second attempt past keeper Hutchison.

Thistle controlled most of the second half but were unable to add a second goal.

Whitburn drew 1-1 away to Glenrothes with the home side's David Caine having the rare distinction of scoring both goals in this basement battle.

He slid a David Murphy cross into his own net in the 65th minute and, nine minutes later, he made amends with a long-range daisy cutter.

In the South Division, Blackburn United were beaten by league leaders Tranent 4-1 at home. The table toppers got off the mark through an own goal by Richard Miller on 25 minutes.

Blackburn equalised on 58 minutes when Craig Spence's corner was hammered home by substitute Andrew McQuillan, but on the hour Stevenson headed Tranent in front and he bagged his brace on 68 minutes with a low shot.

Tranent ended up convincing winners with a fourth goal on 71 minutes through Paul Harvey.

Second-placed Broxburn Athletic had a welcome 2-1 victory at home to Dunbar.

The visitors came close to opening the scoring on 15 minutes when Twaddle's corner hit the bar, but Broxburn's John Jeffrey scored spectacularly on 38 minutes with a scissor kick.

Callum Hill equalised with 15 minutes remaining with a powerful shot from 25 yards but super sub Charles Pearson scored with a thunderbolt from 30 yards to seal the points a minute later for Athletic.

Second-bottom Pumpherston were hammered 4-1 at home to Edinburgh United despite new signing Ross Muir getting them off to a flier with the opening goal early on.

Steven Finlayson restored parity and Alan McDonagh put Edinburgh in front with Brett Dalglish adding a third before the break. Lee Zavaroni added a fourth before Pumpherston's Gordon Adam was sent off.

West Calder United, who sit in fourth place, had a convincing 4-0 win over Sauchie. A penalty from Steven Johnstone gave United the lead with Brett Agnew adding a second.

Johnstone scored his second and West Calder's third before the break and Stuart McLeod added a fourth in the second half.

Third bottom Stoneyburn Juniors slipped to another defeat at the hands of Spartans following a 3-1 scoreline.

Nick Reid scored the Edinburgh side's first with Kenny Young adding a second. Barry Pritchard pulled a goal back for the visitors before half-time, but with five minutes remaining substitute Struan Preston added Spartans' third.

In the Premier League, both Armadale and Fauldhouse went down 2-1 to Tayport and Kinnuoll respectively.
