Russell pays tribute to Livi coaching staff

LIVINGSTON striker Iain Russell paid tribute to the Livingston coaching staff for making the Lions roar to the top of the Second Division following a 2-0 home victory over Forfar.

Russell failed to score for the first time in four competitive matches this season, but, on any other day, could have had a hat-trick.

He said: "The training is tough but enjoyable and I think it gives us a real edge over our opponents.

"Airdie came here last week with a young side, full of energy, but we were able to overcome that and get the three points."

It was probably Livi's best team performance so far this term. The Lions could even have opened the scoring after 34 seconds when Michael O'Byrne headed wide from six yards out.

But their early pressure paid off when, in the 24th minute, Robbie Winters fired into the roof of the net from close range.

Livi made sure of the three points in the 68th minute when midfielder Keaghan Jacobs executed an exquisite left-foot volley from 20 yards out.

The win means Livingston sit proudly at the top of the Second Division – two points clear of Forfar – going into the international football week for Scotland's preparation for the visit from Lithuania at Hampden on tomorrow night.

Livi chief executive Ged Nixon said: "We are delighted with the way the season has started and that has obviously not went unnoticed in the town, so things are looking good for the future.

"We know where we want to be and this is good news considering our first match in the Third Division last season when the attendance was under 700.

"Since winning the league there has been an increase in season ticket sales, which is very encouraging, but it's still early days yet."

Livingston's next match is away to Peterhead on 11 September.
